Christian LegalismChristian legalism is a trap humankind has fallen into throughout the ages. We want to obey God, but in our foolish pride, we want to do it in our own strength, inevitably causing harm to ourselves and others.
God's LawThrough Moses, God gave the Israelites and we His children the Ten Commandments, the ten laws He wants us to follow. They are:
Christian Legalism through the Ages
In Deuteronomy 5:29, God says, Oh that they had such a heart in them, that they would fear Me, and keep all My commandments always, that it may be well with them and with their sons forever! God grieved for the Israelites because His blessings are on those who obey His commandments, but God also knew we humans would blow it. In fact, the only ones who don't seem to realize that we're going to blow it on a regular basis are, well, us.
That's where Christian legalism comes in. We are always trying to figure out a way to obey God's commands in our own weak, human flesh. And anytime we operate in the flesh, we not only blow it, but we also end up harming others. That's how sin - and especially Christian legalism - works.
But while we know that we have been forgiven of all of our sins - past, present and future (Romans 8:1-4) - does that mean that we are no longer responsible for carefully following God's commands? Not so fast. In Matthew 5:17-20, our Lord Jesus Christ says, Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the Law, until all is accomplished.
Christian Legalism and God's Grace
In our human flesh, we're going to blow it on a regular basis. But as the Holy Spirit works in us and through us, He enables us to fulfill the law. But that only happens when we spend time in Scripture, as we continually meditate on God and His Word throughout the day, and as we seek Him with all of our hearts.
Law and God's WillThe law shows us our inability to obey God in our human flesh and reveals to us our desperate need for Christ. The answer is not Christian legalism, but instead a relationship with the Person who alone can transform us and heal us.

About MeI am a writer who has been walking with the Lord for more than twenty years and spend most of my days raising and homeschooling my three children.
This website is my offering to the Lord. The Bible says in Matthew 5:14-16: You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
It my hope and prayer that this website will provide hope, light and insight to those who read it.
The scriptures quoted on this site come from the New American Standard Bible, 1977.
